Joan is getting ready to remove a swarm

On Thursday, August 1, a local beekeeper and adoptive mentor, Mrs. Joan Weir, came to confer with our resident beekeeper, Farm Coordinator Corey Block. Joan and Corey checked the health of TI Job Corps’ hives and renovated Apartment Bee by adding new frames. We expect new bee larvae
to move in soon. Our bees, which were noticeably docile during their examination, received a clean bill of health. After a thorough check-up, no mites were found, which is an important indicator of the overall health of a hive. Trainee Lancedale “Jamaica” Richards had the unique opportunity to get up close and personal with the exposed beehive in order to take pictures for his Senior Projects class. (He will receive at least a bee plus.) The bees did not mind posing and mostly worked hard at looking busy. Our culinary department will benefit by having organic honey available for cooking, though the biggest benefit will undoubtedly be had by our fine diners. ~Mike Hoey
